Meet The Team
Swimming has been a big part of life for me for many years with lots of competitive swimming as a youngster moving onto triathlon events over 20 years ago, open water swims and Masters and Age Group competitions.
Lyme Regis on Dorset's beautiful Jurassic Coast is a great place to swim throughout the year and enjoy the variety of conditions. Video AUTUMN SWIMMING
A lot of my time is also spent coaching young swimmers, at Club and Regional level, for the local Swimming Club where I am part of the coaching team and mentoring young triathletes competing in the South West Triathlon Championships and National Super Series. I am also involved with coaching various Masters groups who are in training for pool competition, open water events and charity swim challenges (River Dart 10K, Bantham Swoosh, Exmoor Swim, Lyme Splash) or Triathlons of varying distance from sprint to Ironman (Weymouth 70.3, IRONMAN Wales, IRONMAN Nice).
I take great enjoyment and satisfaction from seeing my swimmers progress and acheive the results they are looking for. Also motivating and encouraging older people to revisit or take up activities which will help improve fitness, provide long term health benefits and a feeling of well being.
I am a fully qualified Swim England Level 2 Swimming Coach in both Pool and Open Water and a member of the Institute of Swimming with enhanced DBS certificate. I have an extensive experience of coaching swimmers from novice to elite as well as Juniors and all my sessions are carefully planned and risk accessed taking into account the conditions, knowledge, age and ability of the group.
My group/sessions are managed effectively and carefully to provide a safe and enjoyable learning environment for all abilities and age groups and follow the sports’ code of Ethics and National Guidelines.
Ben’s passion for swimming, fitness and coaching is obvious and some may say “a chip off the old block”. He is a competitive club swimmer at County level and has been part of the National Arena League squad since the age of 11. In 2017 and 2018 he gained first position at the South West Regional Open Water Championships in the 17-18 yrs category, gaining a National qualifying entry time. More recently he competed at the BUCS long course championships for his University team, the University of St Mark and St Johns in Plymouth where he is Captain of Swimming & Water Polo whilst studying for a degree in Sports Coaching and Physical Education.
He has also competed in Triathlon, including the South West Triathlon Championships achieving 5th place overall in his age group.
Ben is also a qualified Swim England assistant coach and is dedicated to helping his swimmers progress with innovative and progressive programmes. He is also an RNLI qualified Senior Beach Lifeguard covering Lyme Regis, West Bay and Weymouth. He has been involved in rescues, multiple first aid events and the location of missing persons for which his qualifications in casualty care (Advanced first aid), All-Terrain vehicle and Inshore rescue boat crew all come in very useful and a real asset to the Lyme Bay Swimming crew with lifeguard provision for swimmers when off duty from the RNLI.
"Just wanted to say a massive thank you. I did 1000m tonight putting together everything you have taught me and it was the fastest swim I have ever done. Really enjoying the sessions and seeing the improvements." - Andrew D.
"Thanks for all your advice and technical feedback. It really helped me become much more efficient in the water." Simon S. Taunton
I like to set myself a challenge now and then… last year it was mono skiing, this year I wanted to be able to learn to swim properly - little did I know that Malcolm is a swimming teacher as well as a Spinning guru!! Poor chap had to start me off on sink downs in the deep end and bubble blowing under water! But thanks to him, I swam the tide assisted 6km Bantham Swoosh in the summer. Not only did he get me doing the crawl in the pool, and then in the sea, but he also helped source prescription goggles and the best fitting swim wetsuit - thank you Malcolm. SJL, Taunton.
